A FUN NEW CLASS WHERE KIDS CAN LEARN TO PLAY MAHJONG, DISCOVER NEW SENSORY AND MESSY PLAY EXPERIENCES, AND CREATE WEEKLY THEMED PROJECTS IN A POSITIVE, ENCOURAGING ENVIRONMENT. DESIGNED FOR KIDS TO BUILD FRIENDSHIPS, STRENGTHEN PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS, AND DEVELOP A LIFELONG LOVE OF THE GAME!

Fun • Brain Boosting • Social Join Mahjong Club—a screen-free, after-school activity where kids: • Learn the rules & strategy of mahjong • Build social skills & etiquette • Practice turn-taking, teamwork, patience, & communication • Strengthen focus, memory, problem-solving & pattern recognition No experience needed—just curiosity and a love of fun challenges!

EACH WEEK ALSO INCLUDES THEMED SENSORY & MESSY PLAY EXPERIENCES, WEEKLY TAKE-HOME PROJECTS AND BLOOM-LED ACTIVITIES, PLUS AFTERNOON SNACK & INDOOR/OUTDOOR BLOOM PLAY STUDIO FUN!

Week 1: Kids are introduced to American Mahjong tiles and the concept of how to Mahjong and will practice building lines. Class includes BLOOM’s Mahjong Science Lab with slime making and sensory take-home kits.

Week 2: Students learn how to read the Mahjong card. We walk through setting up the table, building the wall, dealing, and taking turns, focusing on comfort rather than memorization. Class includes BLOOM’s Mahjong Messy Lab with cookie decorating workshop and cotton candy making.

Week 3: This week focuses on how hands are built on the card and how jokers work. Kids practice forming hands, swapping jokers, and learning what jokers can and cannot replace. Class includes BLOOM’s Mahjong Artists Lab (pt.1) with oversized clay tile sculpting. Each student will create an oversized tile to hang in their room!

Week 4: Students learn how to call tiles, when to pick from the wall, and how the Charleston works in a kid-friendly way. We also cover table etiquette, paying attention, and being a good sport. Class includes BLOOM’s Mahjong Artists Lab (pt.2) with tile painting and glazing Students take home projects to display at home.

Week 5: Kids play full games using lots of teacher support. The emphasis is on reading the card, choosing a hand, and finishing a game with confidence. Class includes BLOOM’s Mahjong Magic Lab with Mahjong themed fizzy potion’s and jewelry making.

Week 6: We review rules, common mistakes, and basic strategy like choosing flexible hands. The course ends with fun gameplay! Class includes BLOOM’s Mahjong Designer Lab with Mini Mahjong Tote Bag designs and patch bar!

Meet the teachers:

Morgan Hanson is a counselor at St. Paul’s Episcopal School with over 15 years of experience in education. She teaches mahjong to kids and adults in a fun, supportive, and easy-to-learn way. Her lessons focus on the rules and strategy of mahjong while also building important social skills and etiquette. Through play, children practice turn-taking, communication, patience, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Morgan loves playing mahjong with friends and sharing that sense of community with her students. Her goal is to create a positive, encouraging environment where kids can build friendships, strengthen problem-solving skills, and develop a lifelong love of the game. *

Alexandra Theris is the Owner and Founder of Midtown’s BLOOM Play Studio. Her camps and classes are creatively designed to showcase a wide-range of hands on experiences for our community’s children. Alexandra is a Montessori educator, child developmental specialist, children’s cookbook author and artist with over 15 years of experience in education. At BLOOM, Alexandra creates purposeful play experiences and carefully curates projects for children to explore their creativity, to learn through hands-on activities, and to have fun in a safe and supportive environment designed specifically with their developmental needs in mind! Alexandra loves yoga, bicycling, running and baking. She brings creative energy to her classes and camps and is always seeking to provide unforgettable experiences that help her students discover their passions and embrace new opportunities with open arms! Her studio is geared towards growth through fun and engaging activities cultivated to help kids BLOOM!
